Widely considered one of the best NASCAR drivers ever, Dale Earnhardt lost his life for the sport he loved. On February 18, 2001, he competed in the Daytona 500, and suffered a collision in the final lap that sent his car careening towards a wall, perishing instantaneously.
In third place at the time, the race was won by his driver Michael Waltrip, with his son Dale Earnhardt Jr. finishing second. This photo was snapped just before the race. Reflecting on his mortality, Earnhardt said that if he was crushed by a tractor on his farm, that would be a tragic accident. Dying during a race, conversely, was just life.
