Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman was as gifted as he was troubled. Though the actor was never exactly a household name, he carved out a niche as a first-class character actor. All the while, with the general public being largely unaware, he battled crippling substance abuse issues.
In fact, his habit spiraled so out of control that his partner, Mimi O’Donnell, asked him to leave their family home for the sake of their three children. These photos were snapped by a patron of an Atlanta bar on January 30, 2013 – three days before the actor finally succumbed to a fatal dose back in his Manhattan apartment, aged 46.
