Winning three Grammys and being in the top-ten of Rolling Stone’s list of the best lead singers of all time wasn’t enough to silence Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell’s demons. This photo, taken on May 17, 2017, betrays nothing of the inner turmoil he felt. When the Detroit, Michigan, performance concluded, Cornell returned to his hotel room.
About an hour later, his bodyguard found him there, with the singer apparently having taken his own life. Having struggled with substance abuse for many years, it’s been speculated he may have been under the influence at the time, but his history of depression was also well-documented. He was only 52.
