The military of Germany is known as the Bundeswehr (meaning ‘Federal Defence’), and was established in 1955 – coming to rest in its current form in 1990.
For years before the establishment of the Bundeswehr, it was prohibited for Germany to have an army due to its having been defeated in both the first and second world wars. Today, the numbers it is allowed are limited – but the Germany military nonetheless has 180,000 active personnel, and almost 30,000 in reserve.
