[post_page_title]No cure[/post_page_title]
As someone who was intimately familiar with the disease, Richard required little explanation. In fact, he’d undergone genetic testing in the 1980s that cleared him of the risk of developing it. For those unfamiliar, cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that affects around 70,000 people globally, and for which there is no cure.
The condition causes mucus to build up in the sufferer’s airwaves, until it eventually becomes impossible for them to breathe on their own. At that point, people with CF will require a double lung transplant to stay alive. Even that, however, isn’t a guarantee of living long. As if that wasn’t bad enough, 98 percent of men with CF are infertile, meaning they cannot conceive naturally.
