Richard’s first step was to break the news to his eldest son Willem, then 21 and a university student. He began by telling him about the cystic fibrosis diagnosis. Shockingly, Willem took it in stride. Then, it was time for the other piece of news.
Namely, that it was extremely unlikely for men with CF to father children. Thinking ahead, Willem read between the lines. “You’re saying you’re probably not my father?” he asked. It would’ve been the hardest thing Richard would ever have to say, and he did it for him.
