Joel admitted that his relationship with Richard was difficult, and that the two had not spoken to each other in three years. What was surprising, however, is that the origins of their distance was not actually Richard’s feud with Kate.
It was Richard’s behavior that led Joel to this decision. “He’s a very manipulative man, not the kind of person you want to be with,” he revealed. And it was something that he noticed as early as age 15, so Richard may have been wrong about why his sons weren’t talking to him.
