[post_page_title]Twenty One – Following the script[/post_page_title]
Twenty One was one of the most popular TV shows during the 1950s, but one man stood out more than most. For six weeks straight Herb Stempel went unbeaten. The more he dominated the show, the less people at home decided to tune in, which gave the showrunners a problem.
Their solution was to make Stempel get a question wrong to allow someone else a chance in the hot seat. Stempel agreed, and Charles Van Doren came along to take his place. Van Doren remained unbeaten on the show for three months but had a helping hand as the producers were feeding him the answers. The controversy was the subject of the 1994 movie Quiz Show.
