Sometimes it pays to do your homework, and for one game show contestant that is literally what happened. During 1984’s Press Your Luck Michael Larson went home a very happy man. He took $254,000 in prize money (adjusted for inflation) which is the largest to have ever been won on the show in a single day.
Larson spent a lot of time at home, taping and studying the show until he found what he had been hoping for, a pattern. Then he went onto the show and was able to exploit that pattern for his own gain. While this isn’t cheating, it’s not exactly in the spirit of the show, not that Larson would have minded.
