Martin Luther King Jr. is, without a doubt, one of the single-most influential figures of the 20th century, and of American history. The minister and activist was a leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, determined to achieve equality for black Americans.
King was a great thinker and orator, giving some of history’s greatest speeches, and publishing the landmark essay, ‘Letter from Birmingham Jail’. This photo was taken on April 3, 1968 – the day of King’s final speech, entitled ‘I’ve been to the mountaintop’.
