Although people always say that it’s the taking part that counts, what they really mean is that it’s the winning that counts. After all, those who try seem to get struck cold by the burns of those who have won in the past. Take this exchange, for example.

The girl who curled her hair tried so hard to make sure that it looked good, but she was knocked down by another girl who had perfect curls. It was a cold exchange and one that required a very thick jacket.
