No family-based sitcom is complete without the neighbor-friend character. In Home Improvement, the Taylor family have the neighbor Wilson, and the Bundy family have the D’Arcys. Marcy is Peggy’s friend, and a blueprint of the 80s “new woman.” She’s tough, stands up to Al when she feels he’s being unfair to Peggy, and has a good job that allows her to rise in the ranks. She’s pushy, but the viewer can always tell she really cares about Peggy.
