Unfortunately, Sherman Hemsley passed away in 2012 due to complications involving his lungs. While his character in Family Matters was a loudmouth, he was quite the opposite in real life, largely keeping to himself and staying out of Hollywood drama.
He mainly let his work on the screen talk for him, which it definitely did, as millions of Americans recognized him as George Jefferson from The Jeffersons and All in the Family. This beloved role, as well as a few others, solidify his legacy as an actor to this day.
