In the past 70 years or so, no public figure has been as prominent – and as polarizing – as Queen Elizabeth II. On the throne since 1953, she has become such a fixture of life in Britain that it seems like she’s always been there.
The truth, however, is that she’s getting on in years, and will eventually leave the throne. When that happens, Charles will finally become king. Life will certainly change for him, but it will change almost as much for Prince William and Kate Middleton, whose existence – both official and private – will be thrown for a loop.
