Exiting to the hospital’s parking lot, he started composing a text to his ex-wife Kate with trembling hands. They had been divorced for almost a decade at that point, bringing an end to what Richard described as a “cold and joyless” marriage, but there weren’t any financial issues between them.
As part of the divorce settlement’s terms, Kate received a lump sum of more than $5 million, on top of continuing child support for the children he thought were his. Now, he texted her begging to be relieved of “further indignity” and asked point blank – was he their father? Her reply came within minutes. “Of course the boys are yours,” she wrote, “no matter what the science might suggest.”
