Here’s another household item with a hole that most people can’t explain. After all, you can lift up the tab with or without an opening. However, the real purpose of this feature is to hold your straw in place.
Simply turn the tab around so that it’s over the hole, then push in your straw and move the tab over until your straw is nice and secure. It’s a welcome revelation for anyone who’s had a straw pushed out of the can by all the bubbles.
