Instead of attempting to apply some form of message buried within the images of The Family, Nelson instead wanted to focus on the subject of family at its most basic.
Through this simplicity and lack of overarching subtext, the artist and his subjects were able to better represent real life. The images are able to depict exactly what changes about a family, as well as what does not change so that everyone who sees the images can focus on the very basic subject of these photographs, the nuclear family.
