One fascinating aspect of the The Family project is that Nelson revealed how he prepared the family for their photographing session each year.
While Nelson was certainly interested in the lighting and framing of each photograph, he would not heavily direct his subjects on what to do. Instead, he would build some form of trustful rapport with the family and then simply observe and record what was going on in front of the camera naturally.
