There are tons of movies with “happy” endings that don’t actually stand up to scrutiny, and the first Back to the Future is a classic example. So Marty goes back to 1985, but finds it isn’t the reality he left – all the McFlys are happy, healthy and successful. Even his siblings are no longer failures at life both personal and professional.
But that’s just the thing – they’re different people. Marty’s real family is, effectively, gone. These people may seem like them, but they’re not. It’s unimaginably creepy, him having to spend the rest of his life with people who are almost his family… but not quite.
