It seems the people who had gathered for this hike were all suffering from a similar affliction, as though some other-worldly being was messing with them. Their feet seemingly kept disappearing and then reappearing, but there was a catch.
Their feet were no longer attached to their legs, and they were just walking around of their own accord. Hopefully they were able to find their own feet again before it was too late and they walked off into the distance, never to be seen again.
