We’re not sure when that trope became a thing, but they definitely make good use of it in the Scream series. The first movie’s antagonists are two teens obsessed with horror movies and they know all the tropes and gimmicks used in the genre. So they cleverly use them themselves, as they’re hunting down their friends one by one.
