Geeks are in, and they’ve been in for a while now. It’s difficult to put a finger on what started the geek resurgence. Perhaps it was the success of Game of Thrones. Or, it could even have been the widespread appeal of the Harry Potter novels. Whatever it is, it’s fair to suggest that being a geek has never been trendier, so we had better make the most of it!
And this geeky-oriented culture we seem to have right now got us all thinking about what it means to be a geek. What are the different types of geek personalities out there, and which category do you fall under? Well, it is important to assess what makes up a geekish personality and the traits that play a specific role in each of these personalities. Here are the different types of geek personality for you to assess and understand.
Dweeb
Dweeb might be a fairly uncommon word these days, but there is definitely a dweeb personality type. Generally, the two common characteristics of a dweeb are heightened intelligence and a lack of social skills or awareness. Dweebs can be something of an enigma, and you don’t generally see them mingling with others. People who are not on the geeky end of the spectrum might find dweebs boring, but we think this says more about those people than it does about dweebs!
Dork
A dork is a slightly different type of person that a dweeb. Don’t get us wrong, dorks also share the social awkwardness of dweebs, but they combine that with obsession. Don’t worry, there’s no weird obsessions here unless you think things like comic books/TV shows/movies are weird! Dorks tend to be fanatical about a certain topic or subject, and they like to hang out and socialize with like-minded people.
Geek
Geeks are, in many ways, the original and best, and they are perhaps the most commonplace. Geeks are highly intelligent, and fanatical in their obsessions, but they also tend to be pretty sociable as well, even if it is amongst themselves. Geeks don’t do anything by halves, and they are highly dedicated to their geekery, across many different platforms. Geeks have a thirst for expanding their knowledge, and they also learn quickly and get things done. Expect to see them sporting Buffy the Vampire Slayer t-shirts, and engaging in conversation in pure Klingon.
Nerd
A nerd is a little different in the sense that nerds are that rare breed that boasts the trifecta of personality traits: socially awkward, highly intelligent, and completely obsessed. Nerds are related to academia, but this doesn’t necessarily always have to be the case. Nerds are smart and intelligent, but they tend to have more esoteric interests, and they are obsessed with these. This often leaves little time in their lives for anything else, and, as such, nerds often struggle with things like socializing.
As you can see, some of these certainly overlap, but there are distinct differences between the personality types, and you need to be sure of what these are. Being a geek, dweeb, dork, or nerd doesn’t define who you are, but it certainly gives a window into your personality, and what you are like as a person. And this is something you are going to need to keep in mind if you want to get the best out of life.
