If anything, this is an important lesson in making sure that what you write is clear. The most common reading of this sign would be to assume that there are cows in the area, and anybody using the gate should close it to make sure they don’t get out.
However, this could also be asking a group of sentient, super-intelligent cows to close the gate after they use it. We need to know, because if we miss a chance to see super-intelligent cows, we’re going to be upset.
