Everyone focuses on hard times differently. Calvin knew that while they were going through the worst of it it wasn’t easy, but he had to keep his head up. Of course, so did his mom, and this is clearly a family of survivors.
It sounds horrendous, Ebony and her four children were essentially homeless, yet somehow managed to keep her kids focused on school and get her eldest to college. After all, she was on her way to the library when she was stopped.
