The deep waters of the ocean are an interesting place. Just what lies beneath the waves? It seems as though the sea has held onto many secrets over the years, including many rare sea creatures. Thankfully, we now know just where to find them.

Anglerfish

This is the fish of nightmares for many as anglerfish look like they come packed with a punch. They thrive in dark waters where their distinctive face and teeth make them stand out. Anglerfish use their built-in rod to tempt other fish over thanks to the glowing light on the end before they go in for the attack. If you want to see one for yourself, then you’ll need to head to the Lofoten Islands found in Norway.

Frilled shark

This living fossil has been around for at least 2.5 million years according to their remains, and it looks as though nothing will be stopping the frilled shark anytime soon. This rare creature almost looks like a sea snake thanks to its long body. However, their large shark head soon reminds us of their origins. These creatures are typically seen around 160 feet down in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Eastern fiddler ray

Rays live in all kinds of climates and waters around the world. However, the eastern fiddler ray is unlike many others thanks to the unusual markings along its back. They spend the majority of their time on the seafloor where these rays eat shellfish and any other fish that get in their way. Believe it or not, but eastern fiddler rays can grow up to four feet long in the waters off the Australian coast.

Red-lipped Batfish

Have you ever wanted to see a fish with a makeup collection that rivals even the best of us? Look no further. The red-lipped batfish is found in the waters around the Galapagos Islands. Here, they use a special built-in fishing rod they keep in their snout. These fish will lure others in with their bright red lips, and it seems as though many of us can’t help but get a closer look at them for ourselves.

Sea cucumber

Bikini Atoll is made up of marshlands and many islands, meaning that it is the perfect place for many animals to thrive. Sea cucumbers have been seen floating through these waters for many years as it feeds on all kinds of algae and aquatic animals. The creatures can grow up to six-and-a-half feet long, and shoot their internal organs at predators before regenerating them later.

Giant squid

There have been many stories about creatures of the deep that have kept even the bravest of us up at night. Giant squids are no exception. These creatures live across the world around California, Hawaii, the Sea of Japan, the Pacific Ocean, and in the Gulf of Mexico. As if that wasn’t enough, these giant squids can grow to 46 feet long, but that’s not all. Some giant squid even weigh up to one ton. You might not want to get too close as these are thought to be some of the most dangerous animals in the water.

The sea is filled with all kinds of creatures that often look as though they are out of this world. If you want a chance to take in some of Mother Nature’s finest work, then it could be time to suit up in a wetsuit and dive down to their level for a close encounter.
