Ironically, while many people go all-out on costumes, and others will go all-off on costumes, there’s one group that uses Mardi Gras as a chance to show their elegance, refinement, and genteel beauty. The Baby Dolls started out in the nightlife districts during a time when they faced extreme bias and mistreatment, both for their “unsavoriness” and for the color of their skin.
To challenge views of their race and of their profession, they started wearing gorgeous and innocent outfits during this holiday, a tradition that many Louisianans still honor.
