Before we all converted to spiral shaped LED bulbs, most light bulbs were bubble-shaped for reasons most of us have forgotten about.
Mainly, this had to do with the fact that light bulbs were originally hand-blown, which made them round by default. But there are also practical reasons, including the need for the filament to be equidistant from every surface of the bulb. The easiest way to achieve this was to make the bulb a perfect sphere.
