We’ve come to associate Post-it notes as handy reminders at home or at the office. However, that wasn’t the purpose Arthur Fry had in mind when he invented these sticky tabs in 1974.

Fry simply wanted adhesive paper strips that would hold bookmarks on the pages of his hymnal. He teamed up with Spencer Silver, a coworker at 3M, who had invented an adhesive that would be perfect for his paper strips. By the time they were formally introduced in 1980, Post-its were referred to as “notes.”
