Have you ever wondered why wine bottles have that weird indentation at the bottom? Known in the wine industry as a “punt,” these dimples go back to the days when wine bottles were hand-blown.
That would create a bottom that was uneven, so pushing up the area inside the seam would help the bottle stay up on a flat surface. Nowadays, it’s useful for collecting sediments at the bottom, and keeping them from pouring out with the wine.
