A live-action adaptation of the animated classic ‘Ghost in the Shell’ was always going to be a controversial decision, but the 2017 film attracted criticism for more than just its creative decisions.
One of the major criticisms leveled at the film by critics and audiences alike was the casting of Scarlett Johansson as Major Mira Killian. Given that the film is set in Japan and the characters are Japanese, it was questioned why the filmmakers opted to cast Johannson rather than a Japanese actor.
