This person thought they had come up with the perfect scam to basically get free money from a simple transaction at a store. They would hand the clerk $20 cash, take that from the balance and pay the rest on their debit.
Then they would ask for $20 cashback and so commit the perfect crime. Of course, that $20 also comes out of their bank account, so they haven’t done anything other than spend $20 more than they needed to.
