Why is the world so obsessed with Good Omens?

Is there any better feeling in the world than when you finally find a TV show you love? It can take a long time sifting through the not-so-great to find the absolutely brilliant, but when you finally do find that hit series, you become totally smitten.

The most recent TV series that the world has seemingly fallen in love with is ‘Good Omens’ – a 6-part series recently released for us all to enjoy on May 31, 2019. It became an instant hit with viewers and critics, becoming one of the most successful mini-series of the year so far – but what is so great about it? Why have we all become obsessed with ‘Good Omens’? Let’s explore.

Why is the world so obsessed with Good Omens?

What is it about?

The entire series is based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. It’s primarily a fantasy, but it also has elements of comedy and drama, too. It’s set in 2018, and follows the lives of a demon named Crowley and an angel called Aziraphale. Although it’s not the most conventional of friendships, the two of them have become life-long friends, and now face the end of the world with the impending doom of the Antichrist’s return. Odd, right? Well, believe us, it’s brilliantly written.

Who’s in it?

The show is led by the leading performances of David Tennant (Crowley) and Michael Sheen (Aziraphale). You may already know these two British actors from shows and films such as ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Broadchurch’, ‘The Good Fight’, or ‘Jessica Jones’. We suggest you check them out, too!

The supporting cast includes some big names as well – there’s ‘Parks and Recreation’s’ Nick Offerman, ‘Mad Men’s’ Jon Hamm, and Jack Whitehall (the star of Disney’s upcoming 2020 adventure film, ‘Jungle Cruise’).

Why is it so good?

Critics have praised the show highly, and the viewing figures have been through the roof too. Critics have mostly applauded the chemistry between Tennant and Sheen, with both leading men bringing their star-power and acting talents to the forefront. There’s also been high-praise for the ambitious imagery and stylistic cinematography – mostly thanks to the big million dollar budget!

There’s also another reason why the world has taken notice of the show. Why’s that? Controversy! Due to the show’s plot and commentary that revolves around Christianity and other religious themes and topics, ‘Good Omens’ has sparked both praise and criticism. There’s even been a petition going around urging streaming services to cancel the show and longer air the episodes due to its distortion and inappropriate representation of religion.

Where can I watch it?

The show is a co-production between the BBC and Amazon productions. The entire series was uploaded to Amazon Prime Video in May 2019, so if you’re a subscriber to that particular streaming service, then get watching! The show is also due to be aired on BBC2 throughout the coming months.
